We are delighted to see our wayfinding and signage open to the public for the first time at Dubai Expo 2020. From Friday 22nd January until 10th April, Expo 2020 Dubai will be welcoming guests to its first public preview of the site.
The Pavilions Premiere will offer a limited-time opportunity for visitors to preview Expo 2020’s Thematic Pavilions ahead of their world debut in October 2021. Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion will open its doors first, and then Alif - The Mobility Pavilion and Mission Possible - The Opportunity Pavilion, will follow later in the first quarter of 2021. This will be the first time the wayfinding and signage will be experienced and tested by the public as they navigate to each of these venues.
The concept behind Spaceagency’s signage design is derived from the Emirati craft of ‘Al Sadu’weaving. Conceived as textile ribbons woven in-between vertical ropes, the resulting signage is anintriguing design the merges middle-eastern traditions and western design philosophy. Spaceagency developed a distinct suite of signage manifestations that incorporate artisanal, local craftsmanship with modern state of the art technology. Through internal backlighting, two distinct personalities, during the day and during the hours of darkness, come to life.
This weaving incorporates hand-woven traditional Al Sadu ribbons, developed with the women weavers of Al Ghadeer UAE Crafts Foundation in the United Arab Emirates who are keeping a Unesco-protected craft alive. The project has also inspired an exchange of knowledge and talents that weaves together the past and future, local and global art and design in a manner that champions the best aspects of internationalism through a recognition of shared human values. The visitor’s journey through the
Expo is accompanied by this narrative as they navigate from place to place. The aim of Expo 2020 is to celebrate culture, collaboration and innovation.
